"Are We There Yet?"

The title of this post has absolutely nothing to do with its content. But it's the most annoying question I could think of asked by kids all over the world. My kids don't ask that question too often. The annoying question around here is, "Are we going somewhere?" I know that doesn't sound like it would rub you the wrong way, but you need the back story.

I am neither a homebody nor someone who must leave the house in seek of excitement every day. I fall somewhere in the middle. But every time my kids see me getting dressed in the morning, they ask, "Mom, are we going somewhere?" I usually reply, "No, I'm just getting dressed." Now I must confess to you that I am a person who OCCASIONALLY stays in my pajamas all day. But that's usually only if I'm not feeling well or if I'm having a marathon cleaning day. So there's no need to ask the question every time I get dressed for the day.

Today, my oldest son asked The Question when he saw that I was ironing a shirt to wear. "No, I'm just getting dressed," I replied. My middle son asked The Question when he saw me brushing my teeth. "NO!" I answered a bit more forcefully. "Can't I brush my teeth without you thinking we're going somewhere???" But here's the kicker. I was pulling the vacuum out of the front closet and Sis asked me, "Mom, are we going somewhere?" Now why in the world would vacuuming the carpet lead a person to think they were about to embark on a journey? I just don't get it.

Anyone else willing to share parenting pet peeves to make me feel more normal??? And no, I'm not going anywhere!

I have one. Two little words, "I'm bored." He says it and glazes over as though he had been sitting in a doctor's waiting room for an hour, even when we are currently doing something interesting or exciting, will soon be doing something fun, or there is just a general lull in the day. it doesn't matter. This bugs me.

My pet peeve is that I could be doing something with the kids all morning and they don't seem to have much to say to me. Then, I start doing something else (on the phone, on the internet) and whammo, they have things to show me, things they want to tell me, sing to me, dance for me, ask me....

btw, I stay in my pajamas all day sometimes too. And other times, if we are not going anywhere, it could be noon before I get dressed, so my kids ask the same question: Are we going somewhere? When I get dressed. lol

Kimberly, I have a funny story about "I'm bored." My dad would never allow us to say that phrase when we were growing up. He made the analogy that if we were paralyzed and unable to move, it would give us such great joy just to get up and walk across the room. He made us feel guilty for being bored when we had so much in life. It worked and we never said it again. I STILL won't say that to this day because my dad's wisdom still comes to mind. Therefore, my kids aren't allowed to say it either. :)

Theresa, we definitely have some of that going on here too! It seems like my kids need me most every time I'm on a business call! Or that's when they decide to start fighting! We'll miss them when they're gone though!
